northern paw: Be part of the Mission

Since 2021, SPCA Roussillon takes in Northern dogs at the shelter as part of the Northern Paw program. We are pleased to be able to count on the support of our community to help these dogs achieve a better life.

In many cases, these dogs from the North of the country have been accustomed to a life of wandering or have not had access to all the veterinary care to which our domestic dogs are entitled here. With this initiative, we hope to raise awareness of this issue, and to raise the necessary funds to help them and find suitable homes for each of them.

These rescue missions are made possible thanks to a partnership with two organizations : K9 Advocates Manitoba and Ruff Riders Animal Transport.

YOUR DONATIONS ARE ESSENTIAL: Adoption fees and your donations represent the only funding for the Northern Paw program, we thank you for your contribution!

AVERAGE COSTS TO LEAD A HEALTHY NORTHERN DOG TO ADOPTION

$90 Sterilization and post-operative care (average male-female cost)

… and more

This is not to mention the time spent by our employees to take care of the dogs during their time at the shelter, as well as to find them a family that meets their needs. Some dogs also require further medical attention.

Mickey Mouse is one of three Nordic puppies welcomed to the shelter in March 2021. From northern Manitoba, Mickey Mouse passed his health exam with flying colors, and had already received good socialization with his foster family in Manitoba.

Mickey Mouse was castrated by the SPCA Roussillon team and placed for adoption. This adorable puppy has won the hearts of our community and found his family quickly.

Mickey will live his next adventures alongside his new pack, composed among others of a small human who will grow up with him!

Eddie is one of our brave dogs with a moving story from Nunavut. Eddie was hit by a snow plow a few weeks before he arrived at our shelter in March 2021 and managed to continue his life on the streets with a severely fractured leg.

Because of this lack of urgent medical care, Eddie’s fractures healed in a way that was not recoverable. Here at SPCA Roussillon he had an amputation, and the surgery lasted 3 hours! Now Eddie is living his best life of 3 legs in the loving home of his adoptive family. So far, he shows no signs of slowing down!

This is Dusty, who also arrived at the shelter from northern Manitoba in March 2021. Dusty had to fight against heartworms – a common mosquito-borne parasite in her region.

Most nordic dogs are not fortunate enough to have access to simple preventive treatments like our companions here. Treatment for affected animals is more complex, expensive, and can take several months.

Dusty was adopted by her foster family after several months of treatment.
